July 1, 2017: Commemoration of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel

Atlantic Voices: the Newoundland and Labrador Choir of Ottawa was proud to, once again, take part in the 101st anniversary commemoration of the tragic losses suffered by the Newfoundland Regiment at the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel on the first day of the Somme Offensive. Also taking part in this year's ceremony were the Shallaway Youth Choir of Newfoundland. The commemoration took place at the National War Memorial on Saturday, July 1st starting at 8:00 AM. Although the rain poured down, the commemoration took place with beauty and solemnity to honour those brave fallen from the battle in 1916.

May 29, 2016: Songs of Home: A Celebration of Allister MacGillivray

Small PosterIn the swelter of a late May heat wave, Atlantic Voices celebrated a giant among Canadian songwriters, Cape Breton's own Allister MacGillivray. One of Cape Breton's true artistic treasures, MacGillivray is the composer of Maritime classics such as Song For the Mira, Coaltown Road, Song for Peace and Away From the Roll of the Sea.

We presented a selection of his most popular songs, as well as other treasures from the MacGillivray songbook, newly arranged especially for this concert. We were thrilled to be joined by special guest CiarĂ¡n MacGillivray, Aliister's son and member of The Cottars as well as our friends from the Castenchel Choir.

Fumblin' Fingers got the crowd warmed up (even though it was a scorcher) and then the choirs joined together to start the afternoon off with Song for the Mira. From there we sang songs of life in Cape Breton, leaving Cape Breton and even songs about song. Our usual tea included plenty of homemade goodies and treats and our silent auction had plenty of interesting items.

Thank you to all who attended and to all the volunteers who helped make the day such a huge success.

January 24, 2016: Republic of (Gerald) Doyle: Old-time Songs of Newfoundland

PosterThe place was blocked! On January 24th, Atlantic Voices presented classic Newfoundland tunes first made popular through the Doyle songbooks in Republic of (Gerald) Doyle: Old-time Songs of Newfoundland. A near sell out of almost 600 people enjoyed songs like Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary's, Squid-Jigging Ground, and We'll Rant and We'll Roar as arranged by some of this country's finest choral composers. The concert included rousing sing-a-longs of I'se the Bye and, as a tribute to Ron Hynes, Sonny's Dream.

As usual, The Fumblin' Fingers got the afternoon off to a roaring start getting the crowd warmed up on a blustery winter's day. Our usual tea included plenty of homemade goodies and treats and our silent auction had plenty of interesting items.

Thank you to all who attended and to all the volunteers who helped make the day such a huge success.

TiikaA sad day for the Atlantic Voices family. Our beloved mascot Tiika will no longer be lying down Tuesday evenings in her usual place between the sopranos and the director. She has been a fixture at our concerts and other public appearances for the better part of a decade, and lately has brought her calming presence to our rehearsals each week. Farewell Tiika: you brought a huge load of happiness to our singers and to thousands of concertgoers, young and old, over the years.
